New year resolution number 1 of 12:
Post my art in thespus instead of art_by_adam. I've considered combining the two for a while, and always ended up keeping two journals, but I just don't see any reason to separate my drawings from my other stuff. I'll probably still keep an art-only blog so that you can skip all the non-drawn stuff, but that'll be through my site. Keep an eye out. (I'll probably let you know through this LJ account.)

More stuff. Doodles and whatnot. The lady you mighta seen stapled to the wall at my place. The pencil sketch of Hagrid was a prelim for the colored version, and I ended up loving the prelim and hating the colored one. I'm hoping that "Hagrid's got yer Quaffle, bitch!" will become the new overly-quoted catch phrase. Like the Rick James thing, or the cowbell thing. Only... for dorks like me who read Harry Potter.

What made you seriously interested in doing cartoons?
The
Hagar the Horrible book and the How To Draw Your Favorite Comic
Characters, both of which I must have checked out from the Issaquah
Library at least fifteen times by the time I was 10. Those, and then
the internet brought my cartoony tendencies out of retirement during
college. (Internet Cartoons = 10% "That's Awesome" + 90% "God! I could
do better than that!")

What's your favorite pen or graphic tool?
Without
a doubt, the Pentel Color Brush (Black(#101)) with a squeezable handle
and synthetic bristles. It's perfect for my pencil bag. Better than
real brushes and an inkwell, anyway. This is the awesomest brush-pen
I've found. It was recommended to me by Stefano Gaudiano at the first
Seattle Comic Con, and I immediately rushed to the University Bookstore
and got one and a bunch of ink refills. I'm on my second whole new pen
now. You can sometimes find them in the Sumi Calligraphy section.
(This site is a little pricey.)

What's your favorite topic or subject?
I
assume we're still talking cartoons, here. Probably adventure-type
stories. Duck-Tales, Unca' Scrooge, Popeye, Terry and the Pirates sort
of adventures.

Name a cartoonist (not yourself) who you think should be more widely recognized and celebrated.
Calamity
Jon Morris. Though he's showing up in Disney's new Haunted Mansion
title from SLG, he really needs to get his shit published, because the
people will rejoice. My admiration for his work borders on man-crush.

In your opinion, what's the best thing you've ever drawn?
This
is a tough one because I'm my harshest critic. As soon as I'm done with
something, I think it's terrible, but end up "settling" for however it
ends up. At the same time, I like to think I'm always improving, so the
later stuff's the better stuff. If I had to pick a favorite, it'd be
either MODOK or 50's Teen MODOK but again, looking back, I really think they turned out terribly.

And what's the worst thing you've ever drawn?
Hahaha.
Oh man, there's a whole planetoid of crumpled up paper and shitty
digital art floating around somewhere. Anything from more than a year
ago. In another sense of the word "worst" I once drew a parody of Furry
Porn, which was a *ahem* "cum-slut otter" that was... just... in bad taste, but at the request of a drunken friend. man...

Have
you ever had one of those "I am not worthy" moments, where you've
gotten so much praise for your work that you start to feel weird?
I
don't think so. I always feel weird when I get praise, though, so one
of those moments might just be normal for me. Most of the time I say
"thanks" and figure that people are just being polite.

Has anybody ever tried to get you to quit cartooning?
No. People have tried to get me to quit going for a Drama degree and become a cartoonist instead, though. Shoulda listened.

Has cartooning helped you socially?
In
short-term ways, many times. It'll be a conversation starter, if
nothing else. "Oh, you drew that? That's pretty cool! But you know
boobs can't actually get that big, right?"

What do you imagine your work will be like in five years?
Hopefully, hopefully
it'll be to the point where I'm atcually confident showing it to
people. Ideally it'd be good enough to see print. I mean, I show people
a ton of my stuff, but I never think of anything as really anything
more than sketches. I'd like to be able to sit down and draw something
from my head without two or three rough drafts first. Then I'll be able
to use it like a party trick.

Before there were comics digitally made awesomer, we in the field of dirty jokes used to do this stuff with white-out and a ball point pen. When I was in Portland almost a year ago(!) my sister, Alex's girlfriend Jennifer, (who lived with my sis at the time) and I made the first ever page of comics even better. I really can't believe it has taken me so long to put these up here.

Yeah, the pen-on-white-out scans cruddily.

This was just a doodle with a brush. I don't think I did any pencil underneath. Can you tell? Yes. You can.

But I still think it turned out pretty well!

Here's somethin'. I drew this guy at work. This is a recurring theme. For some reason I can doodle on the side while working and it'll turn out all right, but when I have time to sit and work on something I really want to do, (as was the case this weekend, as a 'fer-instance') it turns out crappily. Frustrating, but hey. Am I right? Hey indeed.

The other day I was wondering why I created a seperate LiveJournal account for my art, instead of simply posting in thespus. Why post my art in a journal that fewer people read? Why not just do what most other people do and use my LJ for both art and ramblings? I don't know.

Or, I didn't know. I do now. It's to dissociate my real self from the wanker who draws things like this.

So... Things that I hate.

-The last panel. Fuck, is that bad!
-My handwriting. Believe it or not, I used my Ames guide for that. Still sucks.
-The colors.
-Inconsistency of style...
This is my biggest beef, and it all boils down to indecisiveness.
I can't decise whether to ink with a brush or a nib. I can't decide whether I should add shadows in the inking stage or the coloring stage. I can't decide which lines should be which color or whether I should leave them all black.

Things I DO like:
-The tree.
-The smoke.
-The ring.

And boy! A character who's all black with no eyes? That's a tricky bit of work, that is.

Lately, I've been quite taken with Metamorpho. Maybe Calamity Jon sneezed and I caught some airborne virus. Maybe it's the idea that Metamoropho can turn into absolutely anything he can imagine. Maybe it's just a man-crush. In any case, here are some work-doodles that I slapped some color on.

At the top's a thumbnail of a silly gag that's been bouncing around in my head. (God knows there's plenty of bouncing room up there.) And just for fun, here're some renditions of his head, and a metamuffin. Don't make fun of my handwriting. I was using a brush. And also I'm retarded.

Every cliche comic needs a certain few things to work, in my book: the boyscout good guy, a zany sidekick, maybe a brooding vengeful bat-person, and the Maxima archetype.

Alien princess from a planet of warrior women, whose sole purpose on Earth is to find a suitable mate. This one's planet was something like Fjord Ko'plah! or something in Norse Klingon. Abel and I thought of a bunch of names for her and the planet over a pitcher of beer. We're dorks. I wrote it all down somewhere so I wouldn't have to remember it.

The best part = the viking boobs. "Our young ones drink mead!"

I rarely eat lunch alone...
